Jesse Alexander Photography
Jesse Alexander, author of seven books on racing and a photographer credited with countless iconic images of drivers and races, set out to earn a living with his camera, having no formal training on how to use it, and nothing more than a passion for motor sports. Over the decades of the 50s and 60s, he was guided by what he called emotion – the grit and grind of such competitors as Jim Clark, Phil Hill and Juan Manuel Fangio. He captured drivers’ exultation and exhaustion in Europe and later in the U.S. by being a member of the racing fraternity instead of merely an observer. His pictures are all the more arresting because he typically shot in black and white, believing “color is distracting.”
